Human genome
Statistics
The human genome is made of about 3,2Gb, i.e. of 3,200,000,000 pairs
of nucleotides, among which 2,95Gb is euchromatic (weakly staining, gene
rich).
About 28% of the whole ADN is transcribed into ARN, and about 5% of
ARN is translated into proteins. As a result, about 1.1 - 1.4% of DNA
sequences code for proteins.
More than 50% of the whole DNA contain repetitions.
Single Nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)
A SNP is a single position in the genome sequence for which two or more
alternative alleles are present at appreciable frequency (traditionally
at least 1%) in the human population. A map of 1.42 million SNPs is
presented in (Nature 409, 928-933). This means that the average
frequency of SNPs in the human genome is about 1 for every 1.9kb.
